Dennis John Anderson, 64, passed away in a logging accident on Camano Island, WA on Tuesday, August 30, 2011. He was born to Sven and Alice Anderson on April 22, 1947 in Everett, WA and lived in the Darrington, WA area his entire life.
At the age of 15 Dennis began his career in the woods working for Sam Forrister as a "powder monkey". After high school he enrolled in Skagit Valley College where he earned an Associates of Arts degree in Mechanics. From there Dennis served a 14 month tour in Vietnam with the Army where he received five medals including the "V" for heroism and meritorious achievement during an intense enemy mortar attack on his platoon.
Two months following Dennis' return from Vietnam he married his high school sweetheart, Cindy. Early in their marriage he supported his family by working as a timber cutter for Walt Hoglund and Buster Meece. This experience inspired Dennis to start Anderson Cutting, the first of many successful family business ventures which included ownership of the Whitehorse Store and a brief septic stint driving the "turd hearse".
With friends, Ernie Gladsjo, Craig Green and Rich Spaulding, Dennis created Three Rivers Cutting. Initially a hand-falling operation, Dennis' innovations resulted in a highly productive mechanical timber falling business which eventually included his sons, Jeff and Jason. Most recently Dennis and the boys were joined by long time friend and business associate, Steve Skaglund, to incorporate logging into the business.
After settling in their first home on Swede Heaven Dennis and Cindy's love for each other manifested itself in two sons, Jeff and Jason. Dennis lived for his sons. He was involved in every aspect of their lives, from coaching DJAA to shagging golf balls and chasing grandchildren. Dennis wasn't a hunter but hunted because his boys did. For Dennis the activity didn't matter, it was all about being with family and friends.
As fifth generation loggers, Jeff and Jason followed Dennis and his love for the woods into the family business. As a father Dennis led by example. His work ethic was contagious, his attitude eternally positive. Dennis could take a disaster and turn it into a vacation, and just like Friday nights at the shop, he was a friend before a boss, just one of the guys. Respected for his compassion he never missed an opportunity to help someone in need. Dennis was the Golden Rule.
Dennis spent the last 42 years enjoying a wonderful life with the love of his life, Cindy. Together they believed in creating and sustaining strong ties with family and friends. Anyone who has ever spent time in the Anderson home knows what it feels like to be included in love, laughter, food, drink and lots of good humored teasing.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Cynthia (Meece) Anderson; his kids, Jeff (Kristen) and Jason (Kerie); grandkids, Riley, Colton, Hannah, Hallie and Hunter; mother, Alice Anderson; parents-in-law, Buster (Jean) Meece; brother, Kenneth (Jeannie) Anderson; brothers and sisters-in-law, Mark (Diane) Meece, Kristi Reece, Brad (Mikie) Meece and Jim Reece; and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.
We would like to thank everyone who has been there for our family especially Kristi Reece, Cindy and Andria White, Roy and Carol Bryson, Darlene Fulfs, Julie and Greg Newberry and all the lovely Da-Da's. Our most sincere gratitude to Steve Skaglund and John and Gary Buse.
