Wilma Jean Bergfeld, age 89, of Mattoon passed away at 2:55 a.m. on Tuesday, October 3, 2023 at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis.

Funeral services honoring her life will take place at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 7, 2023 at Schilling Funeral Home with Pastor Al Gingerich officiating. Burial will follow at Dodge Grove Cemetery. Visitation for family and friends will be held from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service on Saturday at the funeral home.

Wilma was born on May 8, 1934 in Vienna, IL the daughter of J. Esco and Flossie Fern (Mullins) Simpson. She lived in Paris, IL most of her life and went to grade school through high school in Paris, graduating in 1952. Jean married James F. Stephens in 1953 and had two sons, Brian Lee Stephens of Mattoon, IL and David Alan (Doris) Stephens of Maryville, IL. Jean later married G. Anthony "Tony" Bergfeld on August 10, 1973 and they shared a very loving 36 years of marriage before his passing on June 23, 2009.

Jean lived in Mattoon from 1967 until 1996, then she and Tony moved to Sullivan from 1996 until 2006 before returning to Mattoon.

After high school Jean attended Illinois State Teachers College and studied business and secretarial courses. She worked in various offices as a secretary and retired from Harlan Heller Law firm.

Jean was a member of the First Christian Church of Mattoon where she had served several years as Treasurer and was a Deaconess Emeritus. Jean also was a member of the service organization Beta Sigma Phi while living in Paris.

Jean loved to read, did tole painting, knitted, enjoyed growing African violets and loved pretty flowers in general. She and Tony had beautiful flower and vegetable gardens while living in Sullivan.

In addition to her sons, other survivors include her stepson, Steven R. (Susan) Bergfeld of Mattoon, IL; granddaughter, Brooke Stephens of WI grandson, Nicholas Stephens of Los Angeles, CA; great-granddaughter, Savannah; step-granddaughters, Megan (Tom) Rapp of Collinsville, IL and Amanda Lading of St. Louis, MO; step-grandsons, Kurt (Kim) Bergfeld of Jacksonville, FL, Josh (Jessie) Bergfeld of Mattoon, IL and Dan Bergfeld of Mahomet, IL; step-great grandson, Blane Bergfeld of Jacksonville, FL; step-great granddaughter, Ava Bergfeld of Jacksonville, FL; brother, L. Donald Simpson of Lakewood Ranch, FL; several beloved nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband Tony, Wilma was preceded in death by her parents and sister-in-law, Judy Simpson.
