He attended St. Francis of Assisi grade school and graduated from St. Xavier High School before joining the Navy.
While in the Navy, Joe met his wife of 45 years, Josephine Rastallis. They returned to Louisville where they started their family and raised four children. He retired after working for 40 years at the telephone company where he was the Director of Security for Kentucky, and held management positions in Louisville, Harlan, Frankfort and Winchester, as well as Atlanta, GA. He was a charter member of the Kentucky Association of Chiefs of Police, American Society for Industrial Security, Louisville Armed Forces Committee, Kentucky Peace Officers Association, The Filson Club and Knights of Columbus Bishop Spalding Council. He was also a past member of the Kentucky Law Enforcement Council, Juvenile Justice Commission and Jefferson County Welfare Board; the former Commissioner for the City of Wellington, St. Xavier High School Alumni Board of Directors and the University of Louisville Alumni Association.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Josephine Rastallis; a son, Joe Besendorf; his sisters, Sr. Rosamond Besendorf, OSU, and Shirley Gratzer; and his second wife, Evelyn Arbegust Gast.
Joe is survived by his wife, Carolyn Sparks Lyverse Besendorf; his loving daughter, Mary Wesley Mason (John); his sons, Philip J. Besendorf (Nona) and Andrew J. Besendorf, III (Amy); and his grandchildren, John (Maggie), Chelsea (Dave), Trevor (Katherine), Kayla, Rachel, and Andrew J., IV.
His funeral Mass will be at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, October 7th, at St. Louis Bertrand Catholic Church, 1104 S. Sixth Street, with burial to follow at Cave Hill Cemetery, 701, Baxter Avenue. Visitation will be from 2-8 pm on Friday.
