Chico Enterprise-Record, Tuesday, June 2, 1959: "Daniel J. Upchurch. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. in the Apostolic Gospel Temple, 1009 Sycamore Street, for Daniel (*) J. Upchurch, of 971 Cleveland Avenue, who died Sunday in an Oroville hospital. The 86-year-old Chico resident had retired from farming about four years ago. He came to California in 1929 from Arkansas where he had farmed and served as deputy sheriff (1928 at Black Oak). Although he had retired from active farming, Mr. Upchurch still kept busy growing things. Five years ago, at the age of 81, he grew some corn that measured 14 1/2 feet tall. At that time a picture of him and his tall stand of corn was published in the Enterprise-Record. Survivors include his wife, Donna; three daughters, Maude Weaver, of Modesto; Sarah Worthy, of Wasco, and Connie Lee, of Illinois; two sons, Ralph Upchurch, of Chico, and Paul Upchurch, of Visalia; 22 grandchildren and 26 great grandchildren. The Christian Service Society is in charge of funeral arrangements."
