George W. Durham was son of George and Rosanna (née Ambrose) Durham, and nephew to both William and Robert Waddell Durham. Upon arrival in Butte County, George worked in mining, lumbering, and then purchased a small acreage near Durham, the town, named for his family.

Marysville Daily Appeal, Volume XX, Number 74, 26 September 1869: G.W. Durham, a miner near lnskip, was caved on one day last week, while at work in a tunnel, and had his shoulder broken.

*Weekly Butte Record, Saturday, October 23, 1880: "Death of Geo. W. Durham. Geo. W. Durham died at five o'clock this morning, at his residence near Durham station, in this county.

Mr. Durham was only sick a few days, his death having been caused by a violent attack of pneumonia which now is prevailing in various parts of the county. Mr. Durham was an old resident of Butte county, he having settled on his ranch near Durham station in 1860. He was a member of Oroville Lodge No. 103, F.&A.M., and also of Chico Lodge No. 42, RAM of which he was a devout member. The funeral of the deceased will take place at 11 o'clock to-morrow from the residence, near Durham, under the auspices of the Chico Lodge."

Inscription on east side: GEORGE W. DURHAM DIED OCT. 18, 1880 AGED 45 YEARS A NATIVE OF MORGAN CO., VA.
Inscription on west side: "RESTING" 10' x 11' 6" cast iron fencing encloses two graves; formerly gated on SW corner 5' tall dark green polished granite circular spire, supported by a 3' square base plot shared with Louisa Durham 8 x 4 x 4" footstone: "G.W.D.".
