Robert S. Compton was born Oct. 21, 1808 in Sumter Dist., South Carolina. He was the son of James E. Compton (1778-1849) and Mary Matilda Linam (1779-1857). Robert was one of nine children. On Nov, 20, 1838 he married Rebecca McCain (b.1819) in Montgomery, AL. He and Rebecca had nine children, all born in Montgomery County, AL. Robert was listed as a planter in 1860 before the Civil War. It is known that two of his sons, James McCain Compton and John F. Compton enlisted in 1861 with the C.S.A. in Montgomery, AL. James (1839-1876) was their oldest child and George William (1857-1936) their youngest living child. Daughter, Rebecca G. Compton, b. 1855, died at a young age. In 1875, Robert and five of his children and one grandchild moved to Washington County, TX, near the Chappell Hill area from Wetumpka, Elmore County, AL. They were Henry Clay Compton, Mary Compton Stewart and her little son, John Compton Stewart, Alice B. Compton, George William Compton, and Emily J. Compton (Curry). It is presumed that his wife, Rebecca, passed away between 1870 and 1875 in Alabama. Robert S. died in Gay Hill-Independence, Washington Co., TX on May 31, 1880 and was buried at Oak Rest Cemetery, along with his daughter, Emily J. Compton Curry (1845-1880), little granddauther, Emily Juliet Curry (1879-1881), and daughter-in-law, Carrie West Hardy Compton (1873-1900). This Compton family remained in Washington County for at least 25 years before moving to Uvalde and then the Poteet, TX area. Daughter, Mary L. Compton Stewart married James B. Hogg on Jan. 20, 1887 in Washington, TX. and moved to Navarro Co. TX. Daughter, Alice B. Compton remained with her brothers to care for her nephews and never married. Henry Clay Compton was the head of household for many years, along with his brother George William Compton, and Henry Clay never married. It remains unknown as to the whereabouts of John F. Compton b. 1841, and Calvin F. Compton, b. 1850. Calvin was Mary's twin brother. Robert S. Compton's parents died in Allenton, Wilcox County, Alabama. They moved to Wilcox County Alabama from Sumter District, South Carolina around 1835 along with five of their children: James Frazier, Sarah Alice, Emily, Frances, and Marion/Marian Compton. Robert S. lived in Montgomery, AL. Son, Charles R. Compton's wife, Ann Elizabeth Sowerhaver Compton and their children came Wilcox County too, but it seems Charles remained in Sumter, S.C.
