Son of George Grainger (1816-1873) & Ann Willan/Willian (1809-1853) who married 16 April 1838 in Auckland St Andrew, Durham. HIs father is buried Bishopwearmouth, his mother at Stanhope. At least 1 brother came to NZ, Thomas Lewthwaite Grainger (1849-1928)

On the 21 May 1886 George & his family emigrated to NZ on the Aorangi from London. His reason for the move was primarily for the sake of his five sons, believing that he would be providing them with better opportunities for advancement. They originally settled in Napier where he was an Engineer for the Napier Harbour Board
In the 1890-1891 Post Office Directory he is residing at Regent Lane, Napier with his family. Then he became a pioneer in the Kiritaki area. He took a leading role in the establishing of a co-operative butter factory, Kiritaki School, telephone and mail services. He installed the first mechanical milking machine in the district and the fourth in NZ. As well as being a J.P. he was chairman of the Roads Board. Both George and Eliza were devout Church and Missionary supporters.
1907 NZPO Directory: he is listed as a JP, Farmer and Post Master, Kiritaki
* Her daughter May later wrote about her mother's home in Kerikeri when they were pioneers .. Her home was a rough slab whare, a camp-oven and pots slung over an open fire her only means of cooking for her family". Eliza was 50 years old when she began this lifestyle - a far cry from "her pleasant, comfortable and convenient home - staffed with three maids - in the English city of Sunderland"
