He was born June 20, 1898 near Bedford the son of Edwin and Maud (Shepherd) Shafer. Following graduation from high school he attended Cleary Business College in Jackson. He then worked for the Michigan Central Railroad in Jackson and at the General Motors proving grounds in Milford. After living in Saginaw and Hartland for several years, he came to the Big Rapids area in 1938. He was a self-employed lumberman and owned and operated a sawmill and lumber yard. In 1967, he began construction of the present Rogers Heights Service Center. He was a life-member and past master of the Big Rapids Masonic Lodge 171 F and A.M. and in November of this year would have marked his 50th year of membership. He was also a former member of the Stanwood Lions Club and of the Morley Oddfellows Lodge. In 1923 he was married to Dorothy Cruger who preceded him in death in 1958.
He was also preceded in death by a son Raymond a granddaughter and a brother.
Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Harold (Arlene) Chipman of Big Rapids; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a brother Claud Shafer of Tennessee; and several nieces and nephews.
Services will be 1 pm Saturday, Sept. 15, at the Rogers Mohnke Funeral Home with the Rev. Emmett Kadwell officiating. Burial will be in the Highland View Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home Friday afternoon and until services on Saturday.
