Claude Taylor Stone, 83, of 3136 Fairystone Park Highway, Bassett, died Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2003, in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

He was born on Feb. 16, 1920, in Stokesland to Samuel Lucius Stone and Nora Taylor Stone. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Warren Stone Gardner, Geneva Stone Chappell and Virginia Stone Windle.

Stone graduated valedictorian from Spencer Penn High School in 1936 and attended the University of Virginia. He entered the Army in 1941 and served as a master sergeant in the European Theater until the end of World War II in 1946.

After the war, he went to work for Bassett Furniture Industries as vice president of the J.D. Bassett Manufacturing Co., the position he held until retiring in 1985. He also was a founder and partner of Reed's Variety Store in Bassett and Stuart.

Stone had served in a number of community organizations as a leader and a volunteer. He was president of the Bassett Volunteer Fire Department, the American Red Cross, the Bassett Public Library, W.M. Bassett Community Center and the Bassett Rotary Club. He was finance committee chairman of the local Boy Scouts; treasurer and chairman of the building committee for Bassett Church of the Brethren; and for a number of years served on the Henry County Electoral Board.

Surviving are his wife, Barbara Carter Stone of the home; one son, Samuel Taylor Stone of Scotsberg, Ind.; one daughter, Ann Watts Stone Hanes of Winston-Salem, N.C.; three grandchildren; two nephews; and three nieces.
