Peacetime Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient. Born in Truney, Illinois, he served as a Chief Watertender in the US Navy. Chief Watertender Smith was on board the U.S.S. Decatur (DD-5), when an explosion occurred below decks on September 9, 1915. Engulfed in flames, he repeatedly went several times to the below decks entering compartments, locating and rescuing three injured shipmates, saving their lives. For extreme bravery, he was awarded the Medal of Honor on February 8, 1916. He died at age 46 in Brooklyn, New York.
