Samuel was a Confederate soldier who was a prisoner of war on Governor's Island in New York harbor. It is believed he died of starvation while in yankee captivity.

From The Confederate Dead in Brooklyn by John F. Walter:

On March 28, 1863, Shuttlesworth enlisted at Grant's Island, Alabama, and was placed in Company C, First Alabama Artillery Batallion. He was present from enlistment until April 20, 1864. A note in his file with that date reads "Absent on Recruiting furlough for 40 days since April 20, 1864." He was captured on August 23, 1864 when Fort Morgan, Alabama fell to United States forces, and was transported to New Orleans. From there he moved to New York, on September 11, 1864. He arrived at Fort Columbus on September 28, 1864. He died on November 17, 1864 (no cause given) and was buried in grave 2030.
