Libyan Statesman. He served as the Prime Minister of Libya from March 2, 1977 to March 2, 1979. Besides serving as prime minister, he also served in various top posts during the regime of Col. Muammar Gaddafi including general secretary of the General People's Congress and foreign minister. During the 2011 First Libyan Civil War, he again served as foreign minister and tried to mediate peace between pro- and anti-Gaddafi forces. He was detained by rebel forces west of Tripoli in August of that year. In a subsequent legal proceeding in June 2013, he was found not guilty of a charge of mismanagement. He died from a heart attack at the age of 83.
