Aaron A. Scudder enlisted as a Sergeant in Company H, 6th Pennsylvania Reserves. He was promoted to Quartermaster Sergeant, and Quartermaster (1st Lieutenant) in July 1, 1861 and April 5, 1862 respectively. He was selected to fill a place on Colonel William McCandless's staff as Aide-de-Camp. He was captured and taken prisoner of war on Feb. 14, 1864 at Brentsville , Va. He was eventually released and mustered out. On March 13, 1865 he was promoted to the rank of Brevet Captain.
