Leslie "Buck" Boots, 75, of Jacksonville, died Wednesday, August 28, 2002, at Passavant Area Hospital in Jacksonville. He was born on February 9, 1927, in Pleasant Hill, Illinois, the son of John William II and Bertha Howell Boots. He married Donna R. Marberry on May 31, 1975 in Jacksonville and she survives.
He is also survived by four sons, Terry Scheer of Joliet, John (wife, Jennifer) Boots of Winchester, Leslie E. "Bucky" (wife, Karen) Boots of Quincy, and Steve (wife, Joyce) Sweetin of Jacksonville; four daughters, Susan (husband, Archie) Scranton, Loretta Elmore, Annette Boots, and Jennifer (husband, Joseph) Ridder, all of Springfield; three step-daughters, Cheri Marez of Jacksonville and Faye Wahlsmith and Rhonda Tucker, both of Springfield; twenty-three grandchildren, five great-grandchildren; one brother, Don (wife, Evelyn) Boots of VanBuren, Missouri; and three sisters, Mary Connors of Louisiana, Missouri, Francis (husband, Gerald) Buchanan of Frankfort, Missouri, and Opal Motley of Rockport. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Lloyd Boots and Walter Boots, and three sisters, Sue Boots, Lena Daniels, and Maxine Cole.
He retired from Mobil Chemical, where he had been a machine operator for 18 years. He also owned and operated Boots Bait and Tackle in Jacksonville since 1988. Earlier in life, he had been a corrections officer in Joliet, and he owned the DX gas station on State Street, after moving to Jacksonville in the mid-1960's. He served in the United States Navy during World War II, and was a member of the American Legion Post 279 and Amvets Post 100. He was an avid fisherman, and also enjoyed hunting, camping, and riding his Harley-Davidson.
Services were entrusted to Williamson Funeral Home of Jacksonville, Illinois.
