Malagasy Statesman. He served as the 18th Prime Minister of Madagascar from July 23, 1998 to May 31, 2002. Before becoming prime minister under President Didier Ratsiraka in 1998, he served in several ministerial positions under Ratsiraka. In July 1998, he was named prime minister and served in this position for almost four years before stepping down after being detained during an election dispute between Ratsiraka and opposition leader Marc Ravalomanana. He later went to trial in 2003 for various charges, was convicted, and sentenced to 12 years of hard labor. Due to poor health, he was allowed to move to France, where he lived for the rest of his life.
