Nancy McElrath Suddreth, 79, of Candler, passed on Friday, September 15, 2023. She went to be with the love of her life, her husband of 58 years, Wayne Darrell Suddreth, who passed in 2016. She was also preceded in death by her mother, Lily McElrath Thompson, father, Fred McElrath, and a brother, Stuart McElrath.

She is survived by her three daughters, Becky Rogers (Ricky), Susan Grindstaff (Keith), and Julie Anson (Scott); eight grandchildren, and 15 great-grandchildren.

She lived her whole life in the Upper Hominy Community of Buncombe County. She was a devoted Christian woman and was a member of Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church. She sang in a gospel group and church choir, and also served as a Sunday School teacher and mentor to many, telling of her love of God.

She worked tobacco, and enjoyed gardening and canning. She worked second shift at the American Enka plant, was later the Supervisor of the Tax Listing Office, then retired as Supervisor of the Register of Deeds for Buncombe Co. Upon retirement, she was honored by the county with a special day that was her day only. She will be remembered for her contagious smile, lots of love, witnessing, and helping anyone in need. She dedicated her life to family, community, church and God.

Her family will receive friends beginning at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 17, at Groce Funeral Home on Patton Ave. The funeral service will immediately follow at 3:00 p.m. Pastor Ty Allen and the Rev. Austin Watts will officiate. Interment will then take place at Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church Cemetery.
