Herbie, or Pops, as he was so affectionately known, was the fourth generation of Macys to call Iowa Hill, California home, and the last full-time Macy resident. His great-grandfather, Charles Frederick (C. F.) Macy, moved to Iowa Hill in 1854, shortly after the town was founded, and his great-grandmother, Mary Elizabeth Nahor Macy moved there in 1857.
Herbie attended grammar school in Iowa Hill and Colfax and high school in Auburn and Colfax. After school, he followed in his father's footsteps to PG&E and R. J. Miles in Colfax. After retirement he became a local historian.
Pops was quite the artist and drew the Falcon that for many years graced the floor of the Colfax High School gymnasium. He also created the design logo for Iowa Hill, which still adorns many shirts and sweatshirts worn by friends and family.
Pops' greatest pleasure was being with his family, friends, and his dogs (Cooter, shown in the photo and since deceased, and his current puppy Henry).
Pops passed away in his sleep at his home in Iowa Hill on 3 September 2023, age 78. On 23 September 2023 his many friends and relatives turned out en masse to celebrate his life. After a procession from his home in Iowa Hill to the town's historic cemetery he was laid to rest next to his great-grandparents. The ceremony was followed by a reception and celebration of his life at nearby People's Park.
Pops is survived by a wife, three children and one step-child, four grandchildren and one step-grandchild, two sisters, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He will be missed.
