Bill D. Alverson, of Greenwood(Sebastian County), Arkansas, died Saturday, April 12, 2008, at Sparks Regional Medical Center. Mr. Alverson was 84 years old. He was a retird Public School administrator, and a member of Greenwood United Methodist Church. Mr. Alverson was a United States Army veteran of World War II. While in service, Mr. Alverson received the Bronze Star. He was a graduate of The College of the Ozarks, and a charter member of Phi Delta Kappa.
Mr. Alverson was a member of the Arkansas Officials Association, The Arkansas Sports Officals Hall of Fame, and the college of the Ozarks Sports Hall of Fame. Mr. Alverson was also a member of the Lions Club, the VFW, and Retired Teachers Association, both in Sebastian and Crawford counties. He finished his teaching career as the first principal of Chaffin Junior High Chool, but his greatest happines was his family, which he loved dearly.
Mr. Alverson was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and three brothers; and one special son-in-law: Kyle (Duffy)Newton.
He is survived by his loving wife: Clara of the home; two wonderful daughters: Vicki and her husband, Lynn Ellison, of Huntington, Arkansas and Mary Newton of Fort Smith, Arkansas; five special grandchildren: Rebecca Ellison-Benson and her husband, David of Russellville, Arkansas, Hallie Newton of Boulder, Colorado, Patrick Ellison, Kylee Newton of Fort smith, Arkansas, and Bill Newton of Fort Smith, Arkansas; two precious great-grandchildren: Dalton and Ashley Ellison.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, April 15, 2008, at the Ocker-Putman funeral Home Chapel.
Pallbearers were: Dick James, Claude Eubanks, Patrick Ellison, Bill Newton, Lynn Ellison, Jerry Bridges, and James Myers;
Honorary pallbearers were: Stan Cate, Mitchel Wortham, Miles Shopfner, Ralph Riley, Wallace Floyd, and H.B. Stewart.
