William was the son of Charles W. and Catherine (Michel) Rice, one of nine children raised in Brooklyn, NY.

The Newburgh News featured a story on his boxing career on 19 March 1935. According to article, he wore a leg brace after a caisson rolled on him during the World War. He was a member of Battalion B 6th Artillery at Fort Sam Houston, TX and was Honorably discharged 17 Oct 1915.

William wed Margaret A. Conklin 9/5/16 at Lutheran Church in Brooklyn, NY and they raised six children together:
