In 1864, he was a carpenter living in Snow Shoe Township, Centre County, Pennsylvania, but is not found in the 1860 census. He stood 5' 6" tall and had dark hair and blue eyes. He married Martha C. Lucas February 24, 1864, in Moshannon, Centre County, and fathered Andrew (b. 11/21/64).

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted and mustered into federal service at Hollidaysburg, Blair County, March 23, 1864, as a private with Co. G, 13th Pennsylvania Cavalry (117th Pa). Wounded near Petersburg, Virginia, sometime in September 1864 (possibly September 29 at Wyatt's Farm, but that is unverified), he was admitted to Grant U.S. Hospital, Willet's Point, New York City, where he succumbed to his injuries. The company register lists him as "Rabe" and gives his death date as December 26, 1864. He is also in Bates as "Rabe," but his widow's pension file identifies him as "Rafe," as he is buried.

The widowed Martha married Thomas Cameron in 1867.
