John Wesley Ploss - Private, Company G, 71st Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, and Company C, 69th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry.

John Ploss mustered in with the Company G, 71st Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry (1st California Regiment) on September 1, 1861. He was 18 years old and 5' 8" in height, worked as a sash and window maker in New York City. He joined the regiment with an older brother, William Ploss, also from New York City, who was 23 years old, worked as a sailor and mustered in with Company G, 71st Pennsylvania on May 28, 1861. John Ploss fought at Gettysburg at the Angle on the 3rd day, during Picketts Charge. His name is inscribed on the Pennsylvania Memorial at Gettysburg.

When the 71st Pennsylvania was mustered out of service on June 12, 1864, he was transfered, along with over 150 other men, to the 69th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry. He served in Company C, 69th Pennsylvania until his term of service was completed. He was mustered out Sepetmber 7, 1864.

By 1880, John Ploss was married to Isabella Ploss. They had three children and he worked as a dockbuilder.
