He worked for several newspaper companies, in Ashdown, Arkansas, Sallisaw, Oklahoma, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Shreveport, Louisiana, Bossier City, Louisiana. He was also a graphic designer at Louisiana State University Medical Center in Shreveport, Louisiana.

Survivors are wife, Iza {Barnett} Holt of the home; three daughters, Patricia {Holt} and Kenneth Smith of Sallisaw, OK, Cynthia {Holt} Rankins of Mulberry, AR and Donna {Holt} Moore of Frierson, Louisiana; 12 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Jenny Harsel of Atlanta, TX; and several other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his, parents; Lucille {Holt} Brown, Benjamin Harrison {Harry} Chesshir; four brothers, William Howard McDowell, Arthur Franklin McDowell, James Leon Brown, Jr. and Henry Earl McDowell; and one sister, Maylo Hamen.
