111th New York Infantry Co F

Enlisted at 44 on 1 Aug 1862 at Auburn, NY; mustered in PVT Co F for 3 years; wounded in action 2 Jul 1863 at Gettysburg, PA; died of wounds 22 Jul 1863 at Fort Schuyler, NYH. (NYS Adj Gen Rpt, Muster Card; Registers)

Reportedly left a wife and 9 children to mourn his passing.

George Pickard, age 44, of Owasco, who languished in the hospital at Fort Schuyler for more than 20 days after being wounded in the head at the Battle of Gettysburg on July 2, 1863.When he died, from his injuries and complications from meningitis, he left a wife and nine children living on the family farm on Townhall Road near the Giza Road intersection. The records show that George was the oldest Civil War soldier from Owasco. His youngest son, Paul Pickard, was born July 6, 1862, just three weeks before his father left for the war.George enlisted in Company F of the 111th Infantry Regiment on Aug. 20, 1862, and was therefore a soldier just shy of one year....George, as you are aware, was part of Company F, 111th Infantry NY - and the stories of their performance at Harper's Ferry did not cloak that unit in glory. However, in the grand assault of July 3, 1863 at Gettysburg, the 111th again participated in the defense of Cemetery Ridge against Pettigrew's Division. In their 2 days involvement in the Battle of Gettysburg, the 111th N.Y. sustained a casualty rate of 71.7% with a fatality rate of 24.4% - the highest fatality rate of any federal regiment that participated in the battle.Their vindication came at a very high price, but the stigma and disgrace of Harper's Ferry had finally been lifted from the men of the 111th NY
