"Mrs. Byrche was succeeded by her eldest son,
THOMAS BYRCHE SAVAGE, Esq., who assumed the name SAVAGE in 1748, by Act of Parliament, when the Elmley estates were settled on him. He married Dorothy, daughter of Thomas Kynnersley, of Loxley Hall, Co. of Stafford (she married 2ndly Ralph Adderley, Esq.) and died, 1776, without issue. At his death his property was divided. He left his estates to his widow for life, and, on her death, to ROBERT CLAVERING, son of his younger sister, Jane, and on failure of issue, to Thomas Perrott, son of his elder sister, Elizabeth, with the remainder to his nieces Jane Clavering and Mary Perrott, with remainder to his own right heirs for ever. The remaining portion of the estates was left by MR. BYRCHE SAVAGE to his nephew, ROBERT CLAVERING, the son of his younger sister, Jane. MR. BYRCHE SAVAGE was succeeded by his nephew,
ROBERT CLAVERING SAVAGE, Esq., of Elmley Castle, who married Miss Barlow, sister of Baron Parke, afterwards Lord Wensleydale, and had issue,
1. ROBERT CLAVERING SAVAGE, of who presently successor to his father and representative of the SAVAGES OF ELMLEY CASTLE.
MR. ROBERT CLAVERING SAVAGE died in 1829. He was succeeded by his only son,
ROBERT CLAVERING SAVAGE, of Elmley Castle, who died 1866, without issue. This MR. ROBERT CLAVERING SAVAGE was the last of his race that ever owned the Elmley Castle estates. He was very little of a SAVAGE by blood or by character. His mother survived her husband 20 years, and resided at Elmley in much state. At her death, as the House was not entailed, she directed by will that it be sold, as she desired to leave everything she could away from her son, who was of an eccentric and not very reputable character. But he, by his great uncle's will, inherited the Park and large landed estates. "After the sale of the old House of Elmley Castle and the Park, CLAVERING SAVAGE, of London and Paris, often came to stay with his tenant, Mr. Moore..." "Elmley Castle, which stood on the summit of a hill in the deer park to the south of the village, is supposed to have been built by Robert le Despenser, brother of Urse the Sheriff. (fn. 9) After the castle at Worcester fell into decay Elmley was for a time the chief seat of the Beauchamps, and it followed the same descent as the manor of Elmley Castle (q.v.) until the death of Thomas Byrche Savage in 1776. The house and park went to his widow, who sold them to Richard Bourne Charlett, at whose death in 1822 they were purchased of his executors by Colonel Thomas Henry Hastings Davies, M. P. for Worcester."
