Stephen Garrett Willbanks was born December 26, 1825 in Georgia. He was the oldest son of Richard Willbanks and Nancy (Sanders) Willbanks. His siblings were John W., Sarah Ann Elizabeth, William Henry, and Nancy Caroline.

Stephen Garrett Willbanks married Angeline Lanier on December 8, 1845. Stephen and Angeline had 9 children: John Wesley, Francis Salina, Mary Ann Elizabeth, William Andrew Jackson, Martha Caroline, George Pierce, James Marion, Sarah Jane Angeline, and Richard Zelodaus.

In 1850 Stephen was living next door to his father in Chattooga County, Trion District. He was listed as a tailor. In 1860 he is listed as a farmer in Chattooga County. He later owned a large farm on the Chattooga and Walker County line. He enlisted in the 95th Regiment of GA Militia May 4, 1861. During the Civil War, Stephen was a tailer for the Confederacy.

Angeline died May 18, 1896 and Stephen Garrett Willbanks died June 3, 1911. Both are buried in the Willbanks-Bandy Cemetery, Chattooga County, Georgia.
