Veteran of the Spanish American War and World War I as well as the Philippine insurrection, Capt. O'Brien is a holder of the Congressional Medal of Honor.

He died at St. Albans Naval Hospital where he had been a patient for only a few hours.

Capt. O'Brien enlisted in the Army at West Point in 1893. He was a native of Boston and served in the Quartermaster's Corps until his retirement from military service in 1921. While in the Philippines he served under Gen. Douglas MacArthur. He was granted the Congressional Medal in 1909 and was made a captain while in service overseas during World War I. In addition to being a holder of the Congressional Medal he was awarded other medals and citations for service and heroism. His wife Josephine Parson O'Brian died in 1933. His daughter Alice Mary Magrath survives.
