William John Nachtmann was born November 5, 1890 in Bohemia (now the Czech Republic). Around 1892, he immigrated with his family to New York City, settling in the Queens neighborhood of Astoria. William served in the United States Navy (Engineman, 2nd Class) in World War I and was honorably discharged on June 7, 1921. Throughout his life, he worked as a marble cutter and mechanic. On April 15, 1936, William was found with a fractured skull in the furnace room of 22-11 31st Street in Astoria, Queens. At the time, he was working as a mechanic for the Public Works Administration. According to his death certificate, the cause of the injury was undetermined.
