One of County's Few Remaining Confederate Veterans Was Large Land Owner; Funeral This Afternoon.

MONROE, Sept. 4.--Phillip Whitley, one of the few remaining Confederate veterans in Union county, died about 6 o'clock this afternoon. Although he had been in failing health for two months, his death was unexpected.
Funeral services will be held tomorrow afternoon at 4 o'clock at the home in lower Buford township. Interment will be in Beulah cemetery.
Mr. Whitley is survived by the following sons: Dr. A. D. N. Whitley and P. L. G. Whitley of Monroe, Dr. Ayer Whitley of Mint Hill, H. W. B. Whitley of Raeford, Dr. L. L. Whitley of Crawford, Ga., and two daughters, Mrs. W. H. Purser of Chesterfield, S. C., and Mrs. Kemper Helms of this county.
Mr. Whitley was 89 years old. He served in North Carolina during the last two years of the Civil war, and the present reunion of Confederate veterans in Amarillo, Texas was the first one he had missed in several years.
Mr. Whitley was one of the largest land owners in Union county and was a substantial and influential citizen.
