Eleanor "Jane" Young

June 7, 1932 - September 7, 2023
Born in Des Moines, Iowa
Resided in Des Moines, Iowa

Eleanor Jane Young, 91, passed away on Thursday, September 7, 2023, at her home surrounded by her family. Jane was born June 7, 1932, to Elmer and Carrie Luett in Des Moines, Iowa. She attended East High and graduated in June 1950. She and Gerald Young, Jr., (Gerry) were married on June 17, 1951, and raised their children, Curt and Susan, on the east side of Des Moines.

Jane was a devout servant of Jesus Christ and dedicated member of Staves Memorial United Methodist Church for over 60 years. She enjoyed many friendships there and was instrumental in forming a Covenant Group many years ago and was still actively participating in that at the time of her passing. She also started a ministry for shut-ins while at Staves.

Jane remained young at heart and youthful throughout her life and always took pride in looking her best. After suffering a near fatal heart attack in 1991, at the age of 59, her doctor suggested that she might live two more years; she miraculously lived an additional 32 years, however, and was still living independently and driving in the days leading up to her passing.

Jane took great joy in being the bookkeeper for Susan Frye Court Reporting for the past 28 years and loved telling people that she worked for her daughter. She also loved hosting family holiday meals and spending as much time as possible with her family. Another favorite pastime of hers was having lunch with her many longtime friends or going shopping and having lunch with her daughter, Susan. Watching cooking shows on TV and fixing new recipes was also something she enjoyed doing.

Jane was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Gerry; her brother, Harold, who was killed during WWII; her sister-in-law Helen (Luett) Tennant; her brother-in-law and sister-in-law Maurice and Maxine Burns; her nephew Ken Burns; her dear friend Dick Cory; family friend Robert Slezak; and her dog, Franny. She is survived by her children, Curt (Tootie) Young, Susan (Rich) Frye, and her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Whitney (Loren) West, Loren, River, and Serenity; Colin (Jessa) Frye, Aiden and Emmett; and Eric (Kourtnie) Frye, Oliver and Sullivan; her niece Nancy (Bill) Murray, and their family, and nephews Jim (Darlene) Burns, Dave (Becky) Burns, and Larry (Kendall) Burns, and their families; and countless friends who she kept in contact with regularly.

We want to thank all of Jane's doctors and their staffs for their wonderful care of her the last many years. She considered them her friends as well. A special heartfelt thank you also to the at-home Hospice team for their care and support over the last week.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to her church, Staves Memorial United Methodist Church, or to a charity of the donor's choice.

Visitation will be 6-8 PM Wednesday, September 13, at Iles Grandview Park Chapel, 3211 Hubbell Avenue in Des Moines. Funeral services will be 11 AM Thursday, September 14, at Staves Memorial United Methodist Church, 2747 East Madison Avenue, Des Moines. Burial at Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery will be at a later date.
