Funeral Services Held April 15 for Stanley Pelican -

Stanley Pelican, 90, of Grand Island, Nebraska, formerly of Palmer, Nebraska, died Friday, April 11, 2008 at the Nebraska Veterans Home in Grand Island.

A memorial service was held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 15, 2008 at the United Methodist Church in Palmer; Rev. Martin Leeper officiated. Burial was in the Rose Hill Cemetery with military rites by Burton-Beyer Post #120.

Stanley Pelican was born in Nance County in the Loup River Valley near Palmer, Nebraska, December 8, 1917 to John and Anna John Pelican, the youngest of five children. He died in Grand Island on Friday, April 11, 2008 at the age of 90.

Stanley grew up in the Palmer area, graduating form Palmer High School in 1935. He also graduated from sheet metal school at Frye Aircraft in Omaha.

He farmed with his father and brothers until entering the Air Force in May 1942, receiving training as an aircraft avionics specialist at Chanute Field in Rentoul, Illinois, and Anderson Field in Walterboro, South Carolina. He was sent overseas in April 1943 and served in Africa, Italy and India, servicing planes that flew the hump. He contracted malaria and was hospitalized in North Africa for several weeks. He received his discharge in November 1945.

He was united in marriage with Irene Paulsen on August 15, 1942 at Champagne, Illinois. Following his military service, he farmed near Palmer for 60 years. In 2002, they retired to Grand Island. Due to failing health he entered the Nebraska Veterans Home five years ago.

In addition to his love of farming and raising livestock, Stanley played the button accordion by ear all his life, often playing Czech polkas and waltzes for neighborhood parties and community events. He enjoyed bowling, watching professional baseball, spending time with his grandchildren , and traveling. He was a charter member of the VFW, 63-year member of the American Legion Post 120 and served on the firing squad in Palmer for many years. He also belonged to the Palmer United Methodist Church, Platt-Duetsche, and Eagles. He served as a Nance County Supervisor and was on the School Board of Palmer when the new school was built.

He was preceded in death by his brothers, Lumer and Louis Pelican; and his sister, Helen Grosch.

Survivors include his wife of 65 years; his children and their spouses: Linda and Virgil Berney of Grand Island, Marlene and Robert McCammon of Lincoln, and John and Shirley Pelican of Palmer; and a brother and his spouse, Leonard and Ada Pelican, of Palmer. Also left to cherish his memory are seven grandchildren: Sheri Pfeil, Angie Owen, Scott and Chad McCammon, Stacy, Adam, and Sara Pelican; three great-grandchildren, Erick and Anna Owen and Jack McCammon; several nieces and nephews, and many friends.

Memorials are suggested to the American Legion Post 120 and Auxiliary or the Palmer United Methodist Church.
