Cpl. H A Doane was one of the original "camp men" at "Camp Newayo" when the NYSP was formed in Manlius, NY, the summer of 1917.
Their first assignment in 1917, was police the New York State Fair that summer.
Then he was assigned to Troop A.
When the NYSP was formed, men enlisted for 2 years service, some reenlisted, many resigned and/or were drafted in the military. At that time World War I was going on in Europe, most of the Troopers submitted WWI draft registration cards, believing they wouldn't be drafted by joining the NYSP.
Not true, vast majority were drafted.
