Georgia Schmid Diedrich

November 21, 1925 - October 9, 2016

Georgia Schmid Diedrich passed away peacefully on October 9th in Colorado Springs. At the age of 90 she spent the previous day visiting with and telling stories to some of her thirteen grand children and fifteen great grandchildren. Georgia was born in a
small idyllic town in Minnesota where she was raised along with her two sisters and many cousins by the entire village.

As a young girl, Georgia helped out behind the counter in her father's general store and practiced dance and piano. She and her sister performed in costume at many events and celebrations around the state. In high school and college at St. Benedict's she excelled in music, playing the cello, the clarinet, and the piano. Chosen as the head drum major in high school she often spoke of the confidence she gained through her music and continued to play throughout her life.

Georgia and her husband John, a banker in Colorado and Wyoming, raised five children and took great pleasure in their company and accomplishments. Family trips hiking and climbing in the Rockies occupied many weekends during every season of the year. The two of them spent their retirement years in southern New Mexico and were active participants in the community, church activities, and social events there.

Over the years all of the children and grand children received a beautiful handmade quilt or afghan, as John and Georgia collaborated on over 70 wonderful and warm works of art. They also donated a number of them to local charitable organizations. John and Georgia also loved to travel and visited most of the fifty states, many national parks and cultural events in cities across the United States.

In 2000 with the help of a friend, Georgia published three volumes of stories about John's experiences in the Army Air Corps and as a POW during WWII. They were well received and included letters and information about their first years together.

She is survived by her children and their spouses, her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
