Civil War Union Army Officer. He served first as a Private in Company K, 8th New York State Militia, which served for three months in the initial stages of the war. He was then commissioned as a 1st Lieutenant in Company D, 47th New York Volunteer Infantry on August 28, 1861. For the next four years of the war he would serve continually with his regiment, rising to Lieutenant Colonel and second in command by September 1863. During the June 1, 1864 Battle of Cold Harbor, Virginia, he was wounded in the back and right leg. He soon returned to the regiment after the battle, and was wounded again in the September 29, 1864 Battle of Chapin's Farm. A month later the regiment's commander, Colonel Henry Moore, was mustered out, and Christopher McDonald was mustered in as Colonel on October 27, 1864. He led the regiment through to the conclusion of the war, and was honorably mustered out on August 30, 1865.
