McWhorter Funeral Home

Joye Aneene Adamson, 83, passed away on September 4, 2023, in Overland Park, Kansas. She was born on January 24, 1940, in Palestine, Texas, to Jesse Cleveland Poarch and Minnie Belle Poarch.

She attended the University of Texas El Paso where she majored in music. She married Henry K. Adamson III, son of Henry K. Adamson Jr. and Virginia E. Adamson on March 14, 1964, in Midland, Texas. Joye and Henry lived in Germany and several posts in the US while Henry was in the US Army, with their last posting being Fort Leavenworth, Kansas.

Joye and Henry eventually settled in Leavenworth, Kansas where Joye taught Kindergarten before opening two retail stores and an interior design showroom. She went on to work with Robert Baker Interiors in Kansas City where she honed her talents as an interior designer. She established a retail store, Stoney Broke, Ltd., in Fairway, Kansas, and Designers Only, a to-the-trade design showroom, in Prairie Village, Kansas. People always questioned how she came up with the name Stoney Broke, to which she would reply, "We were stone broke when we started it." Joye was a creative soul and a talented designer and truly loved her clients and the people with whom she worked.

Joye is survived by her husband Henry; her son, Henry (Hank) K. Adamson IV and wife Catherine L. Adamson; and granddaughters Megan Earle and husband Jake Earle, Mallory Mansour and husband Ramsey Mansour, and their children Ellory Mansour, Noah Earle, and Emory Mansour.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 am, Saturday, September 16, 2023, in the Chapel of McWhorter Funeral Home. Interment to follow at Gilmer City Cemetery.
