Lydia Jewell Jeffries was the fifth child of James and Effie Jeffries. When she was an infant, the family moved to a farm near Aldrich. In 1919 the family moved to Fair Play, where they remained until after 1937.
Lydia married John W. Breshears on December 25,1935. Their children were Weston, Allen, Jerry, and Barbara.
Lydia's second marriage was to Wally Shelton. They were married in 1964 and lived in Battlefield, Missouri. Upon his retirement in 1974, they built a home in Nixa, Missouri, and spent their time traveling over the United States. They enjoyed going to Nashville, Tennessee, every year for the Country Music Festival.

A family member relates the following story:
"As a child, Lydia was shy and unassuming .... even as she was all of her adult life. Never one to seek the center of attention, she often was overlooked, as on one Christmas when a church member brought gifts to the children of the family, but was one short. Lydia slipped into the background and out of sight so the gift bearer would not realize they had missed anyone. She was always ready to give place to anyone that might need attention."
