He then served in the Army Reserves and worked briefly for Agrico Chemical Company, covering territory in western Maryland and Pennsylvania.
Returning to the Eastern Shore in the mid-1960s, Hursey quickly proved to be a leader in business and real estate in the Salisbury area. A sales associate with Sherman & Associates Real Estate from 1967 to 1973, he opened Porter & Associates in 1973. He served on the Maryland Association of Realtors Executive Committee from 1977 to 1980 and as president of the Maryland Association of Realtors in 1981. He became chairman of the Maryland Association of Realtors Professional Standards and Ethics Committee from 1983 through 1985 and continued to serve on the Public Standards & Ethics Committee for the Coastal Association of Realtors.
In 1997, he merged Porter & Associates with Long & Foster. As an associate broker, he and his wife Nancy began working as a sales team for Long & Foster and became well known for their successful marketing of historic homes, farms and waterfront properties. He became a member of the Founders Club in 2003, selling over $15 million in properties. Recently he and his wife were recognized as the top sales team in Salisbury's Long & Foster office.
Hursey was a dedicated member of many local organizations and deeply committed to community service roles. He served on the PRMC Board of Trustees for six years in the mid-1980s and held seats with the boards of directors for both Second National Building and Loan and Atlantic National Bank for a total of nearly thirty years. He also held memberships at the Salisbury Chamber of Commerce and Salisbury Sunrise Rotary Club. He was also a member of St. Mary's Episcopal Church in Tyaskin.
A 15-year cancer survivor, Hursey was founding member of The Wellness Community -- Delmarva, wanting to establish a local organization to offer support to local cancer patients and their families. He went on to serve as chairman of the board of the Wellness Community -- Delmarva from 2000 through 2002 and continued to serve on its executive committee. In June 2007 he was honored with The Wellness Community Spirit of Survivorship Award.
Hursey will always be remembered for his compassion and humor.
He loved boating, fishing, gardening and showing off his culinary skills. However nothing made him happier than the sound of his grandhildren's laughter. A passionate dog lover, Hursey worked with his wife, Nancy, to rescue dogs in recent years and place them in loving homes.
Hursey will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
