Specialist Jacob J. Fairbanks, of Saint Paul, Minnesota. A 2004 graduate of St. Paul Johnson Senior High School, where was active in Junior ROTC, wrestling and tennis. He had joined the Army in 2004 and was about six months into his second tour in Iraq, assigned to the 1st Battalion, 320th Field Artillery Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), based at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. He died in Baghdad, Iraq, of injuries suffered in a non-combat related incident. Fairbanks' awards and decorations include: Army Good Conduct Medal; National Defense Service Medal; Iraqi Campaign Medal; Global War on Terrorism Service Medal; Army Service Ribbon; Overseas Service Ribbon; and Weapons Qualification, 9-Millimeter, expert. Jake is survived by his wife, Dwan; 4 children, Kayla, Alex, Katelin, and David; mother, Jan Fairbanks of St Paul; stepfather Jeff Sehr of St Paul; father Steven Elwood of Oakdale; sisters, Jennifer and Jill; brother, Jeff Jr.; mother-and-father-in-law, Delbert and Kristine Becker of St Paul; grandparents, Harold and Theresa Fairbanks; best friends Caleb Champeau and Robbie Dodge; many aunts and uncles.
