Born in Ireland, the son of Terence O'Brien and Maria Frost O'Brien. Emigrated to North America in 1862 when they settled in Victoria, B.C. They soon relocated near Kent, WA in a little town named for the family, O'Brien. 3 of his daughters lived to adulthood and into their 80s and 90s, Regina O'Brien Gareau (buried in California), Clare Katherine O'Brien Yambra (buried in St. Patrick's Cemetery in Kent, WA), and Teresa Monica O'Brien Sloan (buried in St. Patrick's Cemetery in Kent, WA).
