Information on Joseph's military Career - transcription from his military records:

Joseph Lang, previously working as a shoemaker, started his military career at the age of 22 by enlisting as a soldier in the US Army on November 29, 1859. The declaration of recruit was made in Detroit, Michigan. The initial enlistment was five years, and he re-enlisted in 1864 for a three year term and again in 1867 for a three year term. He was discharged June 17, 1870, having attained the rank of Corporal in Co. G, 9th Regiment in the Infantry.

On July 8, 1870, in the city of Brooklyn, New York, Joseph enlisted as a private in the US Marine Corps. He re-enlisted numerous times, and attained the rank of Sergeant on February 12, 1879. His last enlistment was on July 12, 1889 in Brooklyn, NY. He was placed on the retired list on April 25, 1890.

Joseph also worked at the New York Navy Yards as a regular watchman. The Navy Yards burned down on Feb. 11, 1900.
