Caleb John Brayton, 74, died Wednesday afternoon at 4:15 at his home just outside the village on the quarry road. He had been in declining health for several years, but was able to be about until a few weeks ago, since which time he had been confined to his bed.
Mr. Brayton was born in Edwards March 28, 1852, the son of Parson and Christiana Seabury Brayton. He was married to Julia Siver, who survives him. For many years they lived in Fowler, but for the past 15 years were residents of Gouverneur. During most of that time, Mr. Brayton had been gardener and caretaker for Arthur E. Cushman.
Survivors include his widow, three sons, Burt Brayton, Richville; Claude Brayton, Hermon, and Henry Brayton, Norwood, and four daughters, Mrs. Minnie Moore, Gouverneur; Mrs. Maud Fields, Black River; Mrs. Pauline Jacquin, Syracuse; and Mrs. Gladys Parker, Buffalo. There is also an adopted daughter, Mrs. Walter Mickens of Gouverneur.
Funeral services were held from the last home at noon Friday and from the Free Methodist church at 1pm, Rev. J. Roberts, pastor of the church officiating. Interment was made in Riverside cemetery.
