Private Reuben M. Kay served in Company K, 1st Regiment (Orr's) South Carolina Rifles, Confederate States Army. He was captured at Petersburg, Virginia, on April 3, 1865. He was transported by prison ship from City Point, Virginia, and was received at Hart Island Prison, Hart Island, New York, on April 11, 1865, two days after the war was over. He died there of typhoid pneumonia on May 21, 1865.

Note: Due to an error in the records, the marker at the grave site of Private Reuben M. Kay in Cypress Hills National Cemetery reads "Robert M. Kay." Robert M. Kay is buried in South Carolina in an unmarked grave.

A memorial marker for PVT Reuben M. Kay has been placed in Little River Baptist Church Cemetery in Abbeville County, South Carolina.
