An excerpt from an article in the Maryville Times called:

EXTREMES OF RANK AND RATING COME TOGETHER THERE.
Seamen of Many Nationalities Buried Back of the Naval Hospital—Insignificant Headpieces for Men of Rank in Our Navy—Costly Slabs for Foreigners.

One of the large marble headpieces has this inscription, that is suggestive of of the new navy and the young men in the service:
FLOYD CRAVEN JAMES,
Seaman Apprentice, Second Class,
U. S. N. Born In Palmyra, Mo.,
Dec. 1, 1871. Died Oct 17, 1891
From injuries received on Board the U. S. S. Atlanta.
Erected by his shipmates.
