The Rev. Harles Newton Earnest, 85, of Milledgeville, formerly of Moultrie, died Thursday, Nov. 16, 2006, at Georgia War Veterans Home in Milledgeville, Ga.

Born March 17, 1921, in Good Springs, Ala., he was the son of the late Aquilla Alvis Earnest and John Earnest.

He served in the United States Marine Corps for 20 years, retiring in 1958 as a master sergeant. He was a World War II and Korean War veteran. He then pastored several churches including Pebble City and Pleasant Hill Baptist in Mitchell County, Midway Baptist in Cairo, Ga., Eastside Baptist in Moultrie and First Baptist in Porterdale, Ga. He was named Rural Minister of the Southeast in 1960. He then spent 14 years as a successful salesman with National Beauty Service. He was also a Shriner.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn Dupree Earnest, and a daughter, Lana Edwards.

Survivors include a daughter, Carol Kent and husband Don of Jonesboro, Ga.; a brother, Merl Earnest of Raleigh, N.C.; four grandchildren, Jeff Kent, Chris Kent, John Edwards and Paul Edwards; and five great-grandchildren.
