Funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Monday at the First Baptist Church of Draper with burial to follow at Dan View Cemetery.
Sammy was born in Draper to the late Samuel W. Gilbert Sr. and Pernelle Motley Gilbert. He was owner and operator of Gilbert Trucking Company. He was a member and past deacon of the First Baptist Church of Draper.
He was past president of the North Carolina Movers Association and retired from the Draper Volunteer Fire Department with 52 years of service.
Surviving are wife, Dovie Conner Gilbert; sisters, Frances Jarrett of Cascade, Va., Ann Jeffries and husband Lewis of Eden, Mary Lewis and husband Herbert of Madison, Carol Hopkins and husband Lawrence of Eden; special nieces, Glenda McDonald and Ellen Anderson; special nephews, Charles Young.
He was preceded in death, along with his parents, by a brothers, Charles Gilbert; sisters, Bernice Hankins and Jean Gilbert and half sister, Maybird Gilbert.
