John H. Newman was born in Pulaski County in Georgia according to his WWI Draft Registration cards. He served in the Army rather than the Navy during WWI.

John was the youngest son of Abraham William Newman and Mary Elizabeth "Mollie" Conner, but had one younger sister named Mary Lou. John survived a drowning accident in May 1891 in which his siblings Fanny, Wiley, Lucius all perished after the family's wagon overturned into the water while crossing a mill pond.
