He enlisted April 2, 1862 at age 16 in Company F of the Tennessee 59th Mounted Infantry led by his cousin, Capt. Henry D. Giesler. He was discharged April 3, 1863 for being underage and re-enlisted July 1, 1863 in Company K 26th Regiment, Tennessee Infantry (3rd East Tennessee Volunteers). He was appointed Corporal Sept 4 1863. He was wounded & captured at age 19 on March 19, 1865 during the battle at Bentonville, NC.

He was treated at the Foster USA General Hospital at New Bern, NC then transported to DeCamp General Hospital on David's Island in the New York Harbor where he died from his wounds June 28, 1865.
