Enlisted in Company H of the Fourth Michigan Volunteer Infantry on February 11, 1863, at Moscow, Michigan, for 9 months, at age 18. Farmer by trade. Mustered February 11, 1863. Substitute for John Kesslering who was drafted on February 10, 1863. Jonathan's physical description at the time of enlistment was: Height 5'8". Complexion dark. Eyes gray. Hair dark. Sent to regiment March 11, 1863. He was one of the new recruits brought from Detroit, Michigan, to the regiment at Falmouth, Virginia, by their newly commissioned Colonel Harrison Jeffords, on March 23, 1863. Died of typhoid fever at Lovell Hospital, Portsmouth Grove, Rhode Island, July 25, 1863. With the regiment less than four months. Born in Huron, Ohio.

Originally buried at Portsmouth Grove Cemetery, Portsmouth, Rhode Island.
