Mary was born in Green Co., Wisconsin to Samuel Leland and Barbara Swingle.

--------------------------------------------

Mary Jeanette Leland Coate was born in Wisconsin September 9th, 1851. While very young her parents moved to northern Iowa later to southern Iowa. At the age of thirteen in the year 1864 the family emigrated to eastern Nebraska and located near the present site of Lincoln. Here she grew to womanhood and at the age of twenty years was united in marriage to T. J. Coate. To this union two sons were born, Walter J. who lives on a farm eleven miles southeast of Perry near Yates, and Marion F. who lives at St. Louis, Mo., and also an adopted daughter, Mrs. Anna B. Moore, who resides in Perry. She is also survived by four brothers. Her father died in Tennessee in the year 1898, at the advanced age of 80 years. At his death her mother came to make her home with her daughter and died in June 1898 at the age of 76, and is buried in the Shelton cemetery near Yates. The deceased by her request was buried by the side of her mother.

Beside her family she leaves a host of friends to whom she was ever loyal. She was a loving helpful disposition, ever ready to lend a helping hand. She was ever patient, bearing her intense suffering without a murmur, placing her trust in Jesus, firm in the belief of His love and care.

When about 26 years of age she united with the Christian church of which she has always been a member and has lived a most faithful and loving wife and mother, devoted to her home and family, by whom she will be greatly missed. To know her was to love her and the love of her friends was best by those who knew her best.
