Elizabeth R. Wood peacefully passed away at her home in Belmont, NC in the company of loving family members on Friday, August 25, 2023, at 98 years old.
The family will receive visitors at 10:45 am on Friday, September 1 at McLean Funeral Directors, 700 S. New Hope Rd., Gastonia, NC. A service will begin at 11:30 am and will be followed by interment at Gaston Memorial Park.
Elizabeth, better known to her family as Sis, was born February 25, 1925, in Savannah, GA, the daughter of McLaurin and Pearl Ridgeway. She was united in marriage to Ralph T. Wood in Sumter, SC in 1945.
She is survived by two sons, Robert Wood of Grover, NC, and Joseph Wood of Williamsburg, VA and his wife Cathy, and two daughters Becky Terry and her husband Jim of Williamsburg, VA and Cindy Falls and her husband Jim of Belmont, NC; She is also survived by 11 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren, one sister, Sarah Bryant and one brother, Felton Ridgeway, both of Sumter, SC.
Sis spent her childhood in and around Sumter, SC where she was the oldest girl in a family of three girls and five boys. She enjoyed being with family and looked forward to summer trips spent with her aunts, uncles, and all her cousins in Ashwood, SC, making boiled peanuts and having watermelon get-togethers. During World War II, she worked at Shaw Air Force Base and as a cashier at the Manhattan Cafe on Main Street in Sumter. That is where she met her husband, Ralph Wood. After a week-long romance they were married for the next 54 years, until his passing in 1999. She raised 4 children and helped raise 11 grandchildren. Her unwavering devotion to family was marked with smiles, laughter, and love. Her life will live on through her loved ones by the love we share with each other as a family.
