7th U.S. Cavalry-BATTLE of the LITTLE BIG HORN. Son of Frederick and Julia Pilgrims Petring. Born in Germany, arrived in U.S. in 1862. Enlisted in 7th Cavalry on December 9, 1874, at age 21, in New York City. Private Company G. Previous occupation was cabinet maker. He had grey eyes, brown hair, florid complexion and was 5'6 3/4" tall. Wounded in hip during valley fight and defense of Reno Hill at Battle of Little Big Horn, June 25, 1876. (Ancestor says eye wound happened in 1877 after the Battle of the LBH) Under the command of First Lt. Donald McIntosh (killed in battle). Discharged on December 8, 1879, at Ft. Meade, Dakota Territory, as a private of good character. Resided at 274 and 369 Manhattan Ave., and 195 Stockholm St., in Brooklyn, New York. Died (age 69) at 1 a.m. on October 7, 1917, in Brooklyn. Survived by his widow Louisa, whom he married on March 14, 1881. His account of the battle can be found in "Custer In '76," the notes of Walter Camp. pp.133-34.
